A strange business was money changing and some of these women did that on the side while in base camp. They exchanged MPC (military payment certificates) to a soldier for “greenbacks” in multiples of 2 to 4 MPC per dollar. They also traded MPC for money orders that a soldier could buy at the Army Post Office. Seems like a “Catch 22” business but it served someone’s interest.
