Cattle and water buffalo were laboring.animals and likely were tough eating when their work career was over. Stories were told of them being cooked by the enemy while living in the jungle but how would an American acquire that knowledge?

The pork and lamb A rations served by our mess hall (when we had one) must have been work animals before they were canned and sent to us. They were tough, tasted terrible, and smelled awful when being cooked. I avoided them and ate 1943 C Rations.
