This “event” made the battery feel like a group as it seldom did to me. We were a “bunch” made up of small groups most of the time. The rotation system to replace men completing their tour caused us to arrive and depart as individuals. Because you had to PROVE YOURSELF to become accepted, you were “tested” without someone else sharing your side of the test. Common experiences create strong bonds, especially if it is a difficult test.
