This fine meal came about because the supply chain ran with precision and order. We lived near the end of that chain and felt that the best food was taken at each stop so the leftovers came to us. I understood 8 soldiers toiled for each one in the field but somehow our food was mostly canned or dried while theirs was often frozen or even fresh. Delayed mail delivery and poor food dominated bitching and the rear area personnel (REMF’s Rear Echelon Mother F*****s) blamed. It is difficult to understand how so many people could deliver so little to us.
Later in my tour I became a REMF and could not understand why men in the field complained about what they lacked as we had paper work to complete.
