Flat rice paddy land covering much of Tay Ninh province framed the Black Virgin mountain and it can be seen from almost anywhere. From Buell 3 FSB it dominated the horizon. It sheltered enemy soldiers and supplies throughout the war because Army tactical operations on it were nearly impossible. Steep and covered in large boulders, it denied our use of tanks and other armored vehicles. Ascent on foot was punishing. Enemy fighting positions sheltered by boulders or built in caves left our grunts exposed on limited travel routes.
