A typical firebase was a circle less than 200 feet in diameter with infantry positions in the outer perimeter and artillery in the center. Similar to the nightly defensive circling of wagon trains crossing the American West, we could fight attacks from any direction. Surrounded by rows of barbed wire, mines and bare ground, 100 infantrymen and 100 artillerymen were a formidable fighting unit.
