The man was arrested by the Vietnamese because he lacked an ID. Vietnamese National Police (called “White Mice” because of the white helmet liners they wore) arrested him. They gave him to us to hold until an interrogation unit took him away. I posed with an M-16 in his mouth (I was not the only person) to create the illusion my job involved capturing him. I wanted to convince someone, likely myself, of my dangerous life in Vietnam. Our reality should have been enough for me and I regret doing it to a man already having a bad day.
