We purchased local ice from this vendor when American-made ice was not available. This shop did not have refrigeration so kept the ice insulated in rice hulls; when it was removed and put in our vehicle water began flowing. We did not consume their ice but used it for chilling, with no direct contact with our food or water. Cans of soda and beer were spun rapidly on the ice for quicker cooling. Alcohol was forbidden in the field by the 25th Division so mostly we spun soda cans. No one I know ever tried the bottles of soda displayed in this store.
