Flat Country

The land around FSB Buell 3 is flat with few trees for cover but the enemy attacked it by ground anyway, along with frequent mortar and rocket attacks at random times. The soil was white sand and was the best earth we put in sandbags because it stayed soft after rain. At most locations we used laterite, a red clay that became a brick the shape of the sandbag after it got wet. Those laterite-filled sandbags could not be emptied; they had to be cut away from the inner brick.
