Accurate 105mm fire required setting 6 howitzers in formation on a spot that could be precisely located and described in grid coordinates on our map. Computations of gun settings begin with that known spot. Accurate artillery fire and computed corrections based on observer data was nearly impossible if our gun location coordinates were wrong.

Chief Sergeant Martinez (Chief of Firing Battery) determined where the guns would be located using the tool on the tripod behind the tent.
