Tay Ninh Base Camp trash dump was several miles away but the black cloud of flies over and around it was so thick it could be seen from several miles away. Standing on one edge of the dump, the other edge was not visible. Flies coated the Vietnamese women and children as they scavenged. A crowd flowed to each new load of trash being dumped and they consumed food as it was found. I was stunned to silence on my first trip to this dump. They made no effort to keep flies from eyes and mouths. I had never IMAGINED such poverty and filth!
