Digging In

«

A silver delta-winged jet is visible near the upper left of the aiming stake. We could feel the ground shake slightly as its bombs exploded, but it was minor compared to a B-52 strike. B-52 strikes were further than a mile away but shook bunkers and toppled sandbag walls. We could not hear or see them prior to an attack so they were a BIG surprise as they began; sudden as an earthquake and continuing for several minutes.

This firebase was just being built and looks very crude, but is prepared for an attack. Enemy ground assaults came in the dark, generally after midnight, and seldom in the first 3 days at a new location.
