Detailed Decoration

The color and detail of the art on the outside of the building seem out of place, but poverty did not stop the patrons of this temple from making it stand out from other structures in the village. Most rural and village buildings were made of reeds and grass or occasionally had “shingles” made from flattened beer and soda cans that we discarded. The roofs of most rural and small town buildings were American tin. That is one way we improved the lives of local Vietnamese; but pilferred sheets of tin did not win us many “hearts and minds”.
