The left-right orientation when preparing to fire is done by the gunner aligning 2 red and white reflective (barber pole design) poles in the guns sight. When firing rounds rapidly a danger was the gunner still in or near the eye piece and having the gun recoil into him. When propelling a round with all 7 powder bags included, that howitzer made a big jump to the rear that could take off his head.
