The well-dressed gun pit in the center of the image is a model example of the desired look. Sandbags cover the top and inside of the berm and the bunker has 3 or more layers on the roof. The dark color on the white sand is a soil binder used to reduce the suspended dust created by shooting the howitzers. The fine, white sand got into everything!
Portable radios kept us in touch with new music and some of the trends back home. The station belonged to the military and they censored some music and news. The DJ’s fought military control in sly ways such as playing the Animals song “We’ve Got to Get Out of This Place” at the beginning and end of each broadcast hour.
‘Chicken Man’ was a radio serial that everyone in FDC followed and the latest exploits of the Caped Crusader were a subject of daily discussion.
