Angel of Death – 105 MM Howitzer

«

Angel of Death is the name given this howitzer by the gun crew, and they were sure it would be. A 105mm artillery battery consisted of 6 howitzers placed in an exact geographic location and formation. Numeric instructions from FDC (fire direction control) were telephoned to the gun chief, for elevation and sideways position (deflection), along with the proper number of powder bags. The desired result would be the artillery round landing in the location requested. To set the proper number of powder bags, the projectile or upper part of the round was removed revealing 7 thread-connected powder bags numbered 1 to 7. Starting with number 7, unneeded bags were removed until the ordered number of powder bags remained. The projectile was then set back into the casing. This cut the string connecting the powder bags. A fuse of the type necessary for the mission was threaded into the tip of the shell and made the round ready to fire. The shell was hand-rammed into the rear of the howitzer and the breech closed to seal the gun for firing. Read the full story. https://vietnamsoldier.com/accurate-artillery-fire-2/
