Beer Cooler

Mama San was OK having her picture taken without me. The large green box in back is a “beer cooler” that used ice for cooling. Ice was seldom available from Army supply so we often bought it from Vietnamese vendors in Tay Ninh City. They had no refrigeration and stored it in rice hulls that slowed melting. It was soft when we purchased it and much of it turned to water before we arrived home. We did not consume Vietnamese ice directly so Army made ice was always most welcome.

The cooler was a base camp luxury! In a fire support base ice was used on arrival as we had no insulated coolers.
